Developing competence in Renewable Energies

Helog Academy Liberia will be boosting the good future of Renewable Energy in Liberia along with GIZ/ EnDev.

GIZ/EnDev has been active in Liberia for many years and has successfully established network with major stakeholders to promote the usefulness of Renewable Energy Technology.  Helog Academy Liberia trained graduates of six students participated in an introductory course in maintenance and servicing of Solar systems at the GIZ facility in Monrovia as a sign of continue cooperation in the years to come. We look forward to more innovative courses by next year through cooperation with GIZ/EnDev.

Excitingly, an outreach of the job is being planned and GIZ/EnDev is committed to providing transport to facilitate the movement of these young engineers from Helog Academy to execute their duties in servicing and maintaining those systems already installed by GIZ/EnDev in the field. Interestingly, part of these activities include the development of Curriculums and training of Trainers (TOT) in accordance with the MOU signed with Mercy Corps.

Flashlight #2 – Donation / Bus purchasing / Train of Trainer

New donation of the State Vocational Training Center Wasserburg a. Inn

Dear valuable Reader,

In July this year HELOG received a generous donation of two fully functioning automobile engines (BMW and Toyota) each mounted on a mobile rack, from the State Vocational Training Center Wasserburg a. Inn / Germany, including an electronic test and diagnosis stand which will enable the students to simulate malfunctions on engines, and to find instructions on how to rectify or repair the problems.

We now have the similar equipment available as it is used in every modern automobile service center. This is another step forward to provide excellent trained engineers to the high skill demanding industry.

Purchase of a second hand school bus in Germany

Those who have already experienced travelling on public transport in Africa may understand the problems our students are faced with on daily basis to reach our campus in time.

To battle this challenge the board of HELOG Academy started a campaign to raise funds for a large second hand shuttle bus.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation to our generous donors from the private business in Liberia, that through their contributions, we could finally buy a bus in Germany and currently prepare it for shipment. It is a MAN A 20 type, 37 seats plus standing for 38 persons.

For the shipping costs we have to start a new funding raising campaign in order to ease the transportation problems of the students, because these costs are in the range of USD 9,000.00!

Anyone who supports us in funding the shipping is welcome!

Conference in Leipzig, Post Ebola Liberia, June 15, 2016

The chairman of HELOG Academy, Wolfgang Zagel and the General Manager Andrea Burg attended this conference which has been organized by the Honorary Consul Michael Kölsch and the Chamber of Commerce Leipzig.
In his speech, Wolfgang Zagel took the opportunity to point out the importance of vocational training in Liberia not just because of the post Ebola period. Under the headline: “Vocational training – No time to wait – No time to postpone” he expressed his concerns that every year a new generation of young people leaves the high schools and rush to the labor market, in addition to this, over 2 million young people, within the age up to 30 are already unemployed. This could cause a critical effect to the
political stability of the nation.
He urged that there is no time to wait, there is no time to postpone, and there is even no time to discuss and to develop long reports about this serious situation. A quick coordinated action is necessary to fill this large gap in vocational education. The government is promoting foreign investment. But any investment requires an educated workforce. Mr. Zagel presented a simple formula:

No education – No investment – No investment – No economic growth

HELOG rely on the responsibility of the private industry, not only to their corporate social responsibility commitment but also to their purely economic interests. HELOG is the initiator of a vocational education pact with the industry, the HELOG Academy pact. The cooperation with the private sector will enable the Academy a sustainable future and provide to the industry educated future employees. He expressed that the mission of HELOG is not just to provide vocational training concepts; it is also a strong contribution for the future economic success of the country.

Lehrmaterialien für die HELOG Academy in Monvoria

Das Staatliche Berufliche Schulzentrum Wasserburg am Inn unterstützt mit einer großzügigen Spende das Projekt der HELOG Academy e. V. in Monrovia/Liberia.
